No it can remain hooked up it works on demand thats why there is a pressure switch.. IE a lot of drag guys use them because of large cams and little to no vacuum at idle. So when you hit the brakes you drain the vacuum from the booster and the motor can't make up the vacuum so there is no brakes the pump kicks on and makes up for it so you dint loose brakes. It hooks to the booster not the hydraulic lines.

They also have vacuum cans to help store vacuum.

yes install and leave it hooked up// IE to ignition hot so while truck is running it would work if needed, and on a toggle override for towing.

well here is a loaded pic for you i just towed it 700 miles round trip to glamis and left the 42 on it as i did not want to swap tires this trip (LAZY) and no problems.
