383 milage
I just got hit up with a pretty good question from a buddy of mine... For you guys running 383's... how did the mpg fare with the swap? I know there are a lot of variables to mpg, but I can't say I've ever built one for street/daily use LOL. BTW he has a 94 Z71 and gets about 13 now... I figure he would be in the same ballpark or a touch lower once he gets used to the power and stops nailing it to the floor all day

Re: 383 milage
Mine's a 383 with '87 vette aluminum heads and TPI sitting on top of it. It's got a somewhat mild mid-range cam. Drivetrain is a Turbo 400, 4.10's and BFG 35x12.5x16.5 Mud-Terrains. Highway mileage is just shy of 14 MPG, running 65-75 MPH. Around town I don't check it 'cause I don't want to know.
Oh yeah, the "Smiles" Per Gallon with the 383 is off the scale! HarryH3 - '75 K5 http://ThunderTruck.ColoradoK5.com It's a great day to be alive... |

Re: 383 milage
Ya, take out the d@mn trash WHILE you're leaving!!! I know the feeling. LOL! It's sorta a gas guzler, but not as bad as a big block. Inbetween a 350 and 454.

Re: 383 milage
I am running a 383, mild cam (melling MTC1), 700R4, 373 gears, 31x10.50-15's. I run dual fuel and get about the same mileage on both Gasoline and Propane. If I hold it between 55-65, I usually get around 15-16 mpg. Squash it and it gets less. I am usually pulling trailers or a boat and am geting this kind of mileage. At 55mph I am only running 1750rpm's, and if you run it up to 60+ about 2000rpms it seems to get a coupe of mpg better as it is getting where the cam likes to run. Hope I helped a little.

Re: 383 milage
My first thought is that a 383's gas milage would be less that a 350. The reason has nothing to do with the setup or it haveing a longer stroke but the plain and simple fact that it has more power and would be ALLOT more fun to drive and the HEAVY foot factor would be GREAT so there for gas consuption would increase

Re: 383 milage
Yeah gotta love the torque of them 383's... although really the 350 TBI's aren't that bad for get up and go... better then a 305 at least LOL. The only reason I would debate between the two is $$$, but since he has a 1500 bill... why not shell out 500 or 1,000 more and get a thumpiong 383!

Re: 383 milage
I want one, I want one. Who's got a 383 that I can get at somepoint. GM was gonna put one on the market but I think they backed down. They even had literature on it, but when I went to the dealer they said it was not available...although the maketing brocure on it made it look sweet. And what about all the other stuff that would have to go into it...computer etc. I'd be interested in opinions on the matter. Would like to have a TPI set up or that edelbrock TBI to fuel injection swap.
