maybe build a 327
I found a 327 today block,crank,rods,pistons.etc,but with no heads. I have some old 305 heads and can get some 400smblock heads. can 305 heads be put on a 327 if so what mods if any, would it be worth doing? same with the 400 heads can it be done? I know you have to have the steam holes drilled in the 400 heads anything else I should know about? TIA

the 327 doesn't require it's heads to ahev steam holes. what is the 327 going to be used for? hard duty or alot of driving? Both 305 and 400 stock heads usually SUCK. They are light castings and overheat/warp more easily in summer and traffic. Find some 350 or 327 heads. 1 piece rear main seal 350s and '68-'69 327s are the same identical block. keep that 327 crank together with it's native block if you can. the 62-67 327s are different than 68-69 327s. keep this in mind when building. the crank main journals are a different size.

Use the 305 heads. This will give you probably 10:1 compression, and with the small ports and 1.84 intakes it will be a very torquey mill that gets good mileage.
I also recommend going to a longer connecting rod, though you will need special pistons for this. Lift It, Lock It, LIVE IT!!! |

OOPS! I meant the 2 piece rear seal 350s are the same block as 68-69 327s. In 1968 & 1969 the 350 and 327 had the same 014 block castings even. If you have heads already I would go with the 305s as opposed to 400s. The 327 is one of the best engines Chevy has EVER made in my opinion. You might want some 5.7 (350)rods, RedDwarf mentioned for some added torque. Remember, before the 80s, ALL small block rods are FORGED too!

Small journal or big journal 327 (hence the year split) The small journal ones are worse than the large journals. Again the "no replacement for displacement" cliche comes into effect. A 350 with the same parts is going to be a better truck motor than a 327.

Thanks for the replys, I have aquired a 327 block and was thinking of putting it in a 82 long bed C-10 I bought for $150
with a blown 305 just for a work truck (mainly for a winter project) as if I need another. I just don't want the block to go to waste it has never been rebuilt or so I was told so I thought instead of spending a lot of cash I would use what I have laying around. I have no clue what I am gonna do.only time will tell.... Elvis does live I seen him at Hardees |

You should have no problem getting rid of that 327 to someone restoring a 327 Camaro, Corvette, whatever. If you don't want it to go to waste, someone restoring a vehicle will have more use for it than you. Could even ask for a 350 in trade! : )

I guess it all comes down to what you want to do with it. I have a steel crank 327 in an original 4X4 64 chevy suburban (the K5s' daddy) that my dad put in iun the 70s' when somebody sugared the original 6 banger. It is very cool little motor and fun to drive. I dont know if the 350 is better or not I have one in my K5 and have given alot of thought to swapin' it for the 327. I probably wont do this simply be cause I am to lazy. The real advantage logistically speaking is that no matter where you live 350s' are likely to be a dime a dozen, on the other hand just sayin 327 gets some attention. They do come from thedays of real cars afterall.

That was a good point that was made..327s are from the days of REAL machines!!!What is the casting # on the 327 block and I could tell you what year it is. It has at least three flat lobes on the cam and has a rod knocking. This thing will hardly pull itself. when I have time I will get you the numbers and have you run them for me. I've been thinking about selling it but I figured It would be easier to sell the truck with a 327 like BEN794x4 said that size always seems to get attention. I talked to a guy that said he had two 350 4 bolts (bare blocks) that said he would trade me even up but I already have a few of those. I figured I would wait and see when he would offer cash....
